<div itemprop="description">Dr. Henry Austin Richter passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 27th, 2016, he was 84 years old. <br />Henry was born on September 14th, 1931 in Christiansborg, Accra, Ghana, to Lawrence Ludwig Richter and Margaret Richter (nee Coleman). Henry was a student at the prestigious Achimota School, Accra, Ghana from 1933 until 1951. He achieved the highest academic honors and was a gifted athlete who proudly represented Achimota in competitions in West Africa as a track and field athlete and champion sprinter as well as a key member of the soccer and field hockey teams. Henry had a life long passion for history, science, classical music and athletics. <br />Henry pursued his dream of becoming a physician and surgeon by obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree with distinction from University London as an external student at the College at Achimota in 1954. In 1955 Henry left Ghana to study medicine at Queens University of Belfast in Northern Ireland, graduating in 1960. In 1967, he became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London, England. In 1968 he obtained his Fellowship with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. <br />After graduating from medical school he worked at posts and appointments in numerous hospitals in Northern Ireland. <br />While working in Northern Ireland he met his wife Daisy Elizabeth Ann Beggs, a nurse and midwife at the Belfast City Hospital. They married in 1964 in Killeevan, County Monahagn, Ireland. <br />Henry returned to Ghana in 1968 to practice medicine. In 1970, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada with his young family. <br />After moving to Toronto, Henry worked for a time at St. Michaels Hospital and eventually set up his practice in 1971 as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Scarborough Centenary Hospital and Ajax Pickering Hospital and retired in 1996. He was a highly respected surgeon, cultivating strong relationships with his patients and colleagues alike. <br />Henry is dearly loved and sorely missed by his wife Daisy, his five children Jonathan (and his wife Raquelle), Adisa, Mark (and his wife Michele), Heidi and Karen (and her husband Tom), and his six grandchildren Kasper, Aur&eacute;lie, Allegra, Henry, James, and Emma. <br />After a private family interment on April 9th, 2016 his family will host a memorial celebrating his life at 1:00 p.m. at McDougall &amp; Brown Funeral Home at 2900 Kingston Road in Toronto. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Dr. Richter&rsquo;s long and successful life. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to please make donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. <br /></div>
