Ingeborg Antonia Franziska Reichel (nee Herglotz)

October 13th, 1923 - November 13th, 2015

“What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” -- Helen Keller

Ingeborg passed away gently at home on Friday, November 13th, 5:07am, with her loving daughter Ava and nurse Zari by her side, one month after her 92nd birthday. She will be remembered for her “joie de vivre” and lifelong love of language, conversation and a good debate. To the end, Ingeborg was a progressive, modern woman who was proud of her family and all that she accomplished in life.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Ingeborg was the first daughter of the late Leopoldine (nee Hudetz) and Robert Herglotz. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Herglotz, sister Isolde Guritzer, brother-in-law Thedy Guritzer, sister-in-law Vivian Herglotz, husband Dr. Ernst Reichel, partner Dr. Derek Richardson and son-in-law Steven Wolfraim. Ingeborg will be missed and lovingly remembered by her beloved and cherished daughter Ava Wolfraim, her dear granddaughter Jessica Wolfraim-Saunders (husband Bryan Saunders), and dear grandson Phil Wolfraim. Loved by her brother Fritz Herglotz, and her late brother Robert’s wife (Inge Herglotz), as well as Ingeborg’s many cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada and Austria. Remembered by her first husband Walter (Alba) Altmann and loved by the Altmann Family and many treasured friends.

Throughout her life, Ingeborg often reflected on her Viennese childhood and growing up during World War 2. She received her education in Austria, Germany and Switzerland where she studied English, French and business. After the war she was a translator for the U.S. War Crimes Investigating Team in Salzburg, Austria, and thereafter an interpreter for the International Refugee Organization - Canadian Section, Salzburg, Austria. This opened the door for Ingeborg to immigrate in 1951 to Canada and her youngest brother Fritz joined her.

Between 1962 and 1964, Ingeborg, her daughter and second husband Ernst lived in the Saskatchewan Prairies. Then in 1964, they immigrated to the U.S. where they lived over the next nine years in Nebraska, Florida, New Jersey, California and Maryland. After Ernst’s death in 1973, Ingeborg returned to Austria for a year, however she moved back to Toronto in 1974. Life in North America was challenging, but Ingeborg’s creative side prevailed. Through her experience in business and knowledge of many languages, she always had fascinating careers that she enjoyed until she retired in 1984.

Over the last 36 years, Ingeborg called the Scarborough Bluffs “home.” Her family, friends and weekly Wednesday afternoon Scrabble games gave her great joy. Ingeborg’s last Scrabble game took place two days before she passed.

The family wishes to thank Ingeborg’s nurses, Zari, Natasha and Sharon, for their compassion and exceptional home care, as well as caregivers Diana and Charlane. A private family internment took place Monday, November 16th, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

A gathering honouring Ingeborg’s life will be held Saturday, December 5th, 2015, 1pm-3pm at Bluffer’s Restaurant, 7 Brimley Road South, Scarborough. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.

Condolences and memories may be shared at www.mcdbrownscarb.ca
